Seventh-day Adventists are Christians who base their faith on Jesus Christ, and upon His Word, the Bible. All fundamental beliefs of the Church are found in the Bible. Above all, Seventh-day Adventists believe in salvation by faith through Jesus Christ. Please feel free to examine our 27 Fundamental Beliefs below.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church traces its history to the Protestant reformation and the great promise of salvation by faith. The Church was officially established in 1863 by a group of people from many other Christian denominations. These people believed in the Second Coming of Jesus, had a strong desire to understand the prophecies found in the Bible, and believed the seventh day to be the Sabbath.

The name "Seventh-day Adventist" is derived from two important Bible teachings.

"Seventh-day" - A reference to Saturday, the seventh day of the week. It was the Roman Emperor Constantine who first changed the day of Christian worship from Saturday to Sunday in 321 A.D. Because there is no Biblical reference for such a change, and because Jesus worshiped on Saturday, Seventh-day Adventists continue to "Remember the Sabbath day."

"Adventist" - A reference to the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. God's promise of returning to Heaven with Him someday is the greatest hope of mankind. It is possible only because Jesus lived a sinless life while here on earth, offered Himself as a supreme sacrifice, and then was resurrected into Heaven. We believe that eternal life begins through faith in Christ. When we accept His life and death in our place, He promises to fulfill His exciting promise of taking us to Heaven when He comes again.

Seventh-day Adventists are committed to humanitarian service, to Christian education, to Christian medical care, to sharing the Gospel freely with all men and women, and offering warm Christian fellowship to all. Programs to assist those wishing to overcome eating disorders, smoking, alcoholism, and drug addiction are operated by the Church as well as many youth summer camps and programs for marriage enrichment, parenting, and family life.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is an international organization established to  aid countries in need of humanitarian development and disaster relief. In 1994 when the country of Rwanda was ravaged by a bloody rebellion between its tribes, the the sole remaining American agency was ADRA, which continued deliveries of food and medical supplies to families, and orphanages who desperately needed help.

The Church operates many hospitals, and one of these Loma Linda University Medical Center in California-has gained international attention as a leader in infant heart transplants. In 1990 Loma Linda inaugurated the world's first and only medical application of the proton accelerator, to focus a beam of radiation on malignant tumors without dangerously harming healthy tissue.

Seventh-day Adventists also operate the largest Protestant parochial school system in the world. Our mission is to integrate Christ's teachings with quality education. We help parents to instill values in their children and a desire to serve.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is one of the fastest growing churches in the world, with members in more countries than any other Protestant religion. This continuing rapid growth is a clear indication of how eloquently the Seventh-day Adventist Church speaks to the needs of a world in turmoil. You might find some current facts and figures about Seventh-day Adventist membership, missions, and outreach of interest.

Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs, as set forth here, constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Revision of these statements may be expected at a General Conference session when the church is led by the Holy Spirit to a fuller understanding of Bible truth or finds better language in which to express the teachings of God's Holy Word.

See the Official Statements page for official statements of the Seventh-day Adventist church about current topics.
